Joy Ko
Ms.Joy Ko is a pianist, flutist, and dedicated educator with a passion for nurturing the musical
growth of young students. She is currently pursuing the Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the
Hartt School, University of Hartford, where she continues to refine her artistry and expand her
knowledge in both performance and pedagogy.
Ms.Ko earned her Bachelor’s degree in Music from Chugye University for the Arts in Seoul,
South Korea, where she established a strong foundation in both performance and music
pedagogy with Professor Youngji Song. She went on to receive her Master’s degree from the
Longy School of Music of Bard College, where she deepened her expertise in performance
and musicianship under the guidance of distinguished Professor Sergio Pallottelli and Sooyun
Kim. These experiences shaped her into a versatile and thoughtful musician, equally dedicated
to artistic excellence and to the education of the next generation of students.
In addition to her academic training, Ms. Ko has performed extensively in orchestras and
ensembles for many years. Her orchestral background provides her with a breadth of
professional experience that she brings into the teaching studio, offering students insight into
ensemble collaboration, listening skills, and the discipline required of a professional musician.
Her teaching philosophy emphasizes three pillars: discipline, creativity, and musical
integrity. She guides students in developing strong technical foundations, careful practice
habits, and expressive artistry, while also encouraging them to cultivate their own musical voice.
Lessons are carefully structured to include technical training, repertoire, music theory, and ear
development, ensuring that her students grow into well-rounded musicians.
As a teacher of children, Ms.Ko is deeply committed to fostering curiosity, perseverance, and a
love of learning. She believes that music lessons should not only develop skill, but also
character — teaching patience, focus, and resilience. Her students are encouraged to approach
music as both a craft and an art form, gaining confidence through consistent progress and
performance opportunities.
Ms.Ko’s dual career as a performer and educator allows her to prepare students for success in
recitals, examinations, and beyond. By integrating her professional experience with a structured
yet supportive teaching approach, she equips her students with the tools to pursue their own
musical goals and to appreciate music as a lifelong companion.
