Tyler Pompei
Tyler Pompei is a professional songwriter, performer, and music teacher. Specializing in piano and bass guitar, he began his journey into the realm of music performance back when he was a young fifteen year old, forming a band with a couple of friends. An original band playing punk music and covering everything from The Smashing Pumpkins to Yes, Koala went on to play many shows around the Boston/Providence area until their eventual parting. At this time, Tyler formed a new original band, Mr. Thinwheel, a jazz fusion outlet that would lead him to the stage of the Middle East in Boston, The Met in Rhode Island, The Hard Rock Cafe, McCoy Stadium, and live performances on public radio, among countless other live performances.
In 2014, Tyler attended the Berklee College of Music Bass Workshop Course instructed by Berklee professors and led by world renowned bassist Victor Wooten (his literal bass hero!). This experience gave him the opportunity to jump on stage at will and learn to improvise in any given musical situation.
In 2018, Tyler began working at School of Rock, where he would hone his teaching and communication skills. During his time there, Tyler accrued over 30 private students on piano and bass, and led many group performance based classes to the stage of local venues to play rock shows. Tyler would eventually depart from School of Rock and further pursue his teaching career independently, with private students of his own.
In terms of approach, Tyler has developed a unique mentality around his teaching style. During his seven years teaching and encountering students of a wide variety of ages and personalities, he became very aware of the fact that there isn’t ONE curriculum that works for all. Rather, like music itself, lessons should always have room for improvisation and flow, and the relationship between teacher and student should be one of open communication and teamwork, working towards each students’ individual and unique goals. Tyler always encourages his students to push themselves towards their full potential, to believe in their unique purpose in the world, and to have the courage to express that uniqueness through songwriting, improvisation, and simply making music!
