Meet Tyler Pompei
Tyler Pompei is a professional songwriter, performer, and teacher who believes music gives us a unique way to express feelings and ideas that words alone cannot. That belief sparked his lifelong love of music and ultimately inspired him to help others discover the same joy through teaching.
Tyler began playing bass guitar and piano as a teenager and quickly immersed himself in songwriting and live performance. He has performed hundreds of shows throughout the Boston and Providence areas with his bands Koala! and the jazz fusion group Mr. Thinwheel, appearing at venues including The Middle East in Boston, The Met in Rhode Island, the Hard Rock Cafe, McCoy Stadium, and live on public radio.
As his musical interests expanded into jazz and classical music, Tyler developed a passion for music theory, technique, and composition. He attended the Berklee College of Music Bass Workshop led by world-renowned bassist Victor Wooten and completed Berklee’s summer music theory program, while continuing to study privately and pursue advanced musical training.
Since beginning his teaching career in 2018, Tyler has taught more than 30 private piano and bass students while also directing group performance classes that prepared students for live performances at local venues.
Tyler believes the best learning happens when teacher and student work together as a team. He encourages students to develop strong technical skills while also exploring the music they love and setting personal goals that keep them motivated and excited to learn.
When students become frustrated or feel stuck, Tyler reminds them that lessons are a place to learn—not to be perfect. He helps students build confidence by celebrating progress, revisiting familiar pieces when needed, and creating an environment where mistakes are welcomed as valuable opportunities for growth.
Parents appreciate Tyler’s open communication and thoughtful approach. He believes every child learns differently and keeps families informed about both successes and areas for continued growth, recognizing that patience and consistent encouragement are essential to long-term musical development.
One of Tyler’s proudest teaching experiences was mentoring a piano student for more than five years before watching her continue her musical journey as a full-time student at Berklee College of Music.
Known for his warm, welcoming personality, Tyler combines patience, clear expectations, and genuine encouragement to help every student build confidence, develop strong musicianship, and discover their own unique musical voice.
